Movie Night, Sunday June 2nd

Sunday, June 2, 2013, a Finnish musical drama “Beauty and the Bastard” with English subtitles will be shown at the Scan Center, Valhalla Room at 5 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Admission $7.00 / person for coffee/tea and pastry.

Its original Finnish title is Tyttö sinä olet tähti, which means “Girl you are a star”. “Beauty and the Bastard” is about opposites attracting between naïve, well-off young female singer Nelli, and rap DJ Sune, a promising but uncompromising rap DJ in the offices of a major record company.

A woman dulled with praise, Nelli, is well on her way to Med-School thanks to her parents, but dreams of a career as a singer. She is desperate to find a demo to show off her talents.

Sune is a crude agent who is afraid of women. To show his friends otherwise, he makes a bet that he can get Nelli to sleep with him. His friends don’t believe a beauty like her would be even remotely interested in him. But meanwhile Nelli sees an opportunity to get herself a free demo.

Playing each other they end up falling in love. This causes troubles for both. The beauty has to learn how to not please everybody and the drifter has to begin considering others in his life and his art. Nelli’s father and her boyfriend are not wild about the idea.

“Beauty and the Bastard” is modern picture of Finnish youth at the brink of adulthood. It tells of love, dreams and principles – as well as how everything often turns out the other way you expect.  It is the feature-film debut of director Dome Karukoski, who had previous experience from commercials and short films.

Multiple Events on Sunday May 26th

On Sunday May 26, 2013 we have multiple events at Scandinavian Centre starting with Baking Class at 2 PM and ending with Outi’s 70th Birthday Party where we can enjoy the results of our baking class and have some fun!
Baking Class, 2-4 PM Viking Hall
Aulikki Heikkila will be teaching us to make Finnish Sandwich-cakes (Voileipakakku). Sandwich-cake is a Scandinavian cuisine dish that is popular in Finland, Sweden and Estonia. This salty cake is compositionally similar to sandwich, but it has such a large amount of filling that it more resembles a layered cream cake with garnished top.
Since the space in the kitchen is limited, we can only accommodate 10 participants - on first come, first served basis. Please RSVP as soon as possible (finlandiacalgary@gmail.com).
General Meeting
The board is calling a General Meeting to appoint new Board Members (up to 2) to replace Katja and Mikko Ahtianen who recently relocated back to Finland. The General Meeting will start at 4:30 PM and should only take about 15-20 minutes.
Outi McEachern’s 70th Birthday Party!
Please join us to celebrate Outi’s 70th Birthday! As most of you know, Outi has been a member of CFCA since 1981 and has done so much for our club! The party will start at 5 PM; food and drinks will be served.
